Steven Smith Winter, 73, of Mesa, AZ. died on November 8, 2024 from natural causes. He was a long-time resident of Cambridge, MA before moving to Arizona several years ago. Steve was born in Colorado Springs, CO on May 9, 1951 to William F. and Dorothy S. Winter. He grew up in an Air Force family in Colorado, France, California, Alaska and Virginia. After graduating from Fairfax (VA) High School, Steve attended Virginia Commonwealth University and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cambridge (MA) College. Steve retired from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council in Boston, where he was Principal Economic Development Planner. Previous positions included Senior Program Officer for World Education, Inc. in Boston, Executive Director of Raudenbush Community Centers in Westford, MA, and Executive Director of the Agassiz Community School, Cambridge, MA. In addition, he was an adjunct faculty member at Leslie University, a member of the City of Cambridge Planning Board and the Cambridge Police Review and Advisory Board, among other civic and board roles. Steve was an avid and eclectic reader who was knowledgeable on a wide range of topics. He was both a gregarious and private person who loved kitsch, puns, and off-beat art and music. Steve was a kind and generous soul who often went out of his way to help others having difficulties. He was predeceased by his parents, sister-in-law Faith Winter, nephew Jason Ellis, great-nephew Harrison Winter and James Delancy. He is survived by his siblings, Joyce Ellis (Don), Michael Winter (Ellen Robert) and David Winter as well as many other family and friends.
