Robert John von Handorf Jr., known affectionately as "Robbie", passed away peacefully on March 9, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, surrounded by family and loved ones. Born on July 21, 1956, in Boston, Massachusetts, Robbie grew up on Franklin Avenue in Chelsea, where the foundations of his character were laid amidst the warmth of a close-knit family and the beauty of his surroundings.
He pursued his education with fervor, attending Chelsea High School and later earning degrees from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), the University of Rochester, and the University of California, Irvine. Robbie's academic achievements were a source of immense pride for him, rivaled only by his devotion to his family.
Robbie embarked on a remarkable career that began at Northrop Grumman and included stints at OCA, Lightworks Optics, Ball Aerospace, and ultimately BAE Systems. His professional journey was marked by dedication and excellence, traits that he carried into all aspects of his life.
On June 8, 2000, Robbie married the love of his life, Grace Flores von Handorf, at the Santa Ana Courthouse in California. Together, they built a beautiful family that became the cornerstone of his existence. He is survived by his beloved wife Grace and their cherished children: Jhoemelyn, Robert J III, Kyle, and Chelsea. He was also the proud grandfather of three grandsons: Jordan, Jackson, and Jameson, whose laughter filled his heart with joy.
Robbie had a zest for life that shone through in everything he did. He had a deep love for the wind and the waves, finding freedom in the surf. His passions included scuba diving, kayaking, and spending time by the sea at Laguna Beach. He enjoyed classic rock and reggae music, often filling the air with melodies that matched the rhythm of his free spirit. His warm laughter and the stories he shared about his adventures will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.
He leaves behind his loving siblings: Carol, Carl, Roberta, Eric, and his twin sister Isolde, who will forever hold onto the precious memories of their time together. Robbie also shared an enduring bond with his extended family, including David and Carolyn Uminski, who were an integral part of his life.
Robbie is preceded in death by his father, Robert John von Handorf Sr., and his mother, Esther Moretsky, who both played pivotal roles in shaping the man he became. Their love laid the groundwork for his compassionate nature and steadfast values.
As we remember Robbie today, we honor not just his accomplishments but the love and light he brought into the world. He touched many lives and inspired those fortunate enough to call him father, brother, husband, and friend. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends, guiding them as they navigate the waves of life in his absence. Rest in peace, Robbie; you will be forever missed and cherished.
